Defining IT & technology terms

Software license position

Software license position refers to how many software licenses an organization is paying for in relation to how many it’s using. Software Asset Management (SAM) strategies inform an organization’s software license position by analyzing its IT environment to understand where software is installed.

In software procurement, businesses sign contracts with software publishers that outline how many licenses they can have installed in their IT environment. Understanding the existing software license position helps a business understand if it’s compliant with those agreements in the event of a software audit.
